The Reason I Started eBay
The first time I came across eBay was when I casually watched a YouTube video, wondering if there was a good side hustle I could try.
Nowadays, you can do all sorts of things using just your smartphone.
At first, I didn’t trust the video at all. I didn’t know any English, and I thought, “eBay? It’s probably just another shady website.” That’s as much belief as I had in it.
But what made me start to believe was something my wife said.
She told me, “That’s called eBay, right? I think I’ve heard of it before. It’s an auction site like Yahoo Auctions, and it seems to be pretty popular right now.”
Hearing that finally convinced me to take it seriously. Though I wasn’t sure if I’d actually try it, I kept watching the video out of curiosity.
“I want to start a side hustle.”
Amid the ongoing rise in prices, relying solely on my salary makes the future uncertain.
I can’t even buy the things I want.
I was growing tired of constant restraint, and that’s when I encountered eBay.
I wanted to start a side hustle.
I wanted to earn more through a side hustle.
eBay was what truly motivated those feelings and pushed me to take action.
As a husband and father, I can’t afford to make any careless decisions.
However, I knew I had to do something because this surge in prices shows no sign of settling down.
Looking ahead to retirement, it’s clear that I’ll definitely need money.
If I don’t take any action now, I know I’ll end up living off just my pension.
That is a lifestyle I absolutely want to avoid.
So, with determination, I decided to give it a try.
This is the story of why I started eBay.
“Can you make money?”
When asked if I can make money, as a complete beginner right now, I can’t say for certain.
But perseverance brings strength. Doing nothing isn’t an option.
That’s why I’ve decided to keep going, looking ahead to the next 10 years. I made that promise to myself.
I invested 100,000 yen upfront. A printer, a specialized scale for weighing packages, and the cost of the items I listed for sale—before I knew it, it amounted to 100,000 yen.
However, I never joined any shady sites or watched suspicious videos claiming to talk about eBay. I opened the site myself. There are countless suspicious websites out there.
If you get involved with those, they’ll end up charging you even more under the guise of seminars or similar tactics—or so I believe.
In today’s world, it’s hard to trust anyone. It’s a society where you can only rely on yourself.
So, while I spent 100,000 yen initially, I’ve had almost no expenses beyond that. Advertising fees and shipping costs are about all I’ve needed.
What’s most important is your own determination. I believe it takes the habit of studying, the mental strength to discern right from wrong, and patience.
The procedures were incredibly tedious, but after overcoming all that, I finally managed to launch my store.
Currently, I have six followers and have sold seven items.
I strive to communicate closely with buyers, and so far, I’ve received 100% positive feedback.
Everything is challenging at first. It’s the same with any job—you have to work like crazy to learn it if you want to succeed.
eBay is no different. It’s an overseas auction site, and its recognition in Japan is still somewhat limited. But those who know, know.
That’s why I believe there’s potential to find success here.
As I write this, I know I’ll continue learning and experimenting along the way. My website has settled for now, but I’m sure it’ll evolve again.
By trying new things, failing, learning, and repeating this cycle, I believe I’ll eventually find my stride.
That’s exactly why I’m enjoying myself right now.
With this side hustle, I can earn money, exercise my mind, and communicate with people overseas.
Someday, I hope to build relationships with repeat buyers and maybe even visit them during an overseas trip.
There are people who have actually done that, and I envy them.
That’s why I won’t give up. I’ll work hard to make my store successful and eventually grow it into a company.
Below, I’ve provided an introduction to eBay from its official website.
